Chemistry
Why Pembroke?
Pembroke is a unique and engaging place to study Chemistry.
We have three senior academic tutors in Chemistry - more than most other colleges! - who are all enthusiastic about teaching and at the same time are leading ground-breaking research. Together they possess a wide range of expertise, covering the breadth of the discipline and extend beyond it. Chemists at Pembroke have access to learn from and debate with academics that are engaged in the most up-to-date techniques and analysis.
We pride ourselves on developing the full potential of all our students and providing them with excellent support. Many of our recent graduates have gone on to higher degrees in research both at Oxford and around the world: we view Pembroke as an excellent training ground for those dedicated to the sciences.
What extra activities are on offer?
In addition to a focussed tutorial programme, we offer revision classes that guide you through the Oxford exam processes, and additional specialist tutorials and support in all of the subsidiary course topics: maths, biological sciences and physics.
The Pembroke Undergraduate Chemistry Society (PUCS) brings together undergraduates and graduates once a term for a dinner or social occasion, giving you the opportunity to meet and integrate with the full College chemistry community (undergraduate, graduate and academics).
Could you be a Pembroke Chemist?
You need to be motivated, be able to work independently and have a willingness and ability to express ideas clearly and effectively orally, in writing and numerically.
If you are considering this course, please attend an open day where you can meet our tutors and students and find out more. This is the best way to get a feel for whether you should make an application. We look forward to meeting you!
Chemistry Course Video

I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years at Pembroke as I got to meet other extremely bright and kind-hearted people outside of my area of study and it has benefitted me immensely.
The Chemistry course is quite intensive at times, but also highly rewarding in the end, as it allowed me to explore topics in so much more depth than I thought I ever could –in particular, the Part II year provided me with the amazing journey.
Graduated top of the year in Oxford Chemistry
The Rokos Internship Scheme provides full funding for academic summer internships.
Pembroke non-finalist STEM students are eligible for up to £1,000 funding for summer internships, allowing them to gain hands-on research experience. The award covers all academic and living expenses, including accommodation.
Below are some reports from Pembroke Chemists who used this award in the last few years:

Cian Lomax (2021, MChem Chemistry)
Funded by the Rokos Award, Cian spent eight weeks working in the Surface Engineering Lab at the Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre. He worked on projects using a method of PVD (physical vapour deposition) called magnetron sputtering - a technique used in a variety of ways in wide-scale industry.
He says: "I had a fantastic time, gaining experience of what a life in academia is like, as well as the skills required to carry out experiments and analysis. I was exposed many aspects of the industry and research, insight which I could not have learnt in a textbook.'

Zoe Faure Beaulieu (2018, MChem Chemistry)
With a Rokos Award, Zoe was able to undertake an internship at the Goodwin Group in Oxford in 2020. Her project's aim was to determine whether vacancy ordering could lead to the emergence of bulk ferrimagnetism in a key family of guanidinium. Read her report here.
