Realising Potential
Our Realising Potential pillar has three key themes:
Research
Research is at the heart of Pembroke’s educational mission, providing the foundation for tutorial teaching and shaping the next generation of scholars. Our students thrive when guided by tutors who are active researchers and leaders in their fields, introducing them to the latest discoveries and ideas.
To attract and retain the most talented undergraduates, graduates, early career researchers, and Fellows, we must provide the support they need to push boundaries in their research, develop innovative solutions to global challenges, and engage with the broader world in which they operate.
Research funding is increasingly scarce and that is something we hope to address through Imagine Pembroke. Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers are the educators and innovators of tomorrow. We are therefore seeking to establish permanently endowed graduate scholarships and Junior Research Fellowships that will enable the brightest minds to come to work and study at Pembroke. We will also create an endowed Research Fund for our Fellows to access, enabling them to pursue blue-sky research at an early stage than funding bodies typically support.
Access and Outreach
Pembroke was the first College to appoint an Access and Outreach Fellow and our OxNet programme [link] is one of the leading widening participation programmes in the University.
We want to build on our experience pioneering successful approaches to Access and Outreach, enhancing and expanding our engaging with underrepresented communities and even younger pupils.
Student Engagement and Experience
As the needs of our student body change over time, we want to be able to provide the resources necessary to attract and support the brightest students, regardless of background. The wide range of extra-curricular activities available at Pembroke and Oxford are an essential part of an enriched and inspiring student experience. We want to encourage our students to make the most of the extra-curricular activities on offer and to support them with funding to make these opportunities accessible to all.
Additionally, welfare support for our students is vital to enable them to realise their potential and make the most of the opportunities available to them at Pembroke. We have recently appointed a dedicated Welfare Lead, and are working to build on our effective and sustainable approach to welfare to meet the needs of our student body.
