College Lecturer in English
Pembroke College wishes to appoint a part-time College Lecturer in English, from 1 October 2025 to 31 August 2026 (with the potential to extend for a further year).
We welcome applicants with expertise in Old and Middle English language and literature, and with a particular emphasis on global approaches to Medieval studies, to complement the existing interests of the college fellowship. We have a lively English community in Pembroke with students working on both Course I and Course II of the English degree, and with a significant presence in Joint Schools involving English.
All of our teaching is in small groups (tutorials of two/ three students and classes, usually up to a maximum of six students). You will be required to teach the following courses: Old English Literature for Prelims, Middle English Literature (FHS Course I and II), and relevant Course II papers.
We would also like you to contribute in your areas of expertise to teaching students on our Junior Year Abroad programme (third year students from universities in the USA, Hong Kong and China) and also advising (and supervising when relevant) students on the dissertations which are part of their final degree course.
You will be required to provide teaching for an average of four hours’ contact time per week during the eight weeks of term. You will also be expected to set and mark weekly essays, set and mark college exams and participate in undergraduate admissions. You will also take on administrative and pastoral responsibilities, including organising teaching and taking a leading role in organizing teaching for students taking Course II.
The salary will be in the range of £11,046-£12,205 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. You will have a teaching and research allowance of £283.33 per annum., use of a room for teaching, and you will also be able to take some lunches and dinners free of charge in College throughout the year. All salary figures are 2024-25 rates and are subject to annual uplift.
