Bursar
Having just celebrated its 400th anniversary, Pembroke College now seeks a new Bursar to join the College at a landmark time in its history. While reflecting on its roots, Pembroke College now sets its course for the next century, aiming to become the College of choice in the world’s greatest University. The College is situated in a beautiful historic site in the heart of Oxford with 55 Fellows and 740 students. Pembroke is an innovative and imaginative College with a dynamic leadership and inclusive community. The College has just launched a new, ambitious fundraising campaign to raise £100 million to invest in teaching, research and scholarship, and the estate, in order to take the College to new aspirational heights.
As the most senior financial and operational officer of the College, the Bursar’s primary responsibility is to implement and deliver the College’s strategy, while providing oversight of the operations, finances, estate, investments and regulatory compliance. The Bursar has responsibility for strategic oversight of the College’s financial plans, and will play a leading role in the delivery of some ambitious capital projects. The new Bursar will also play a key role in supporting the College’s fundraising and engagement strategies, including the current Imagine Pembroke Campaign. They will also contribute to the management of the complex financial arrangements between colleges and the University. The successful candidate will be elected to a Fellowship and will report to the Master and the Governing Body.
Ideal candidates will bring experience of strategic and/or financial management at a senior level with a strong track-record of delivery and an understanding of investments. Highly collaborative and strategically-minded, the successful candidate will combine financial acumen and initiative, and will be committed to the College community. Candidates do not have to be qualified accountants, but must be highly numerate. The post-holder will be a clear communicator and excellent team-worker, with a collaborative approach. They must be able to engage widely across the College, with Fellows, staff and students, and be at ease representing the College externally. They will be an inspirational leader. The Bursar will join the College at a crucial time and will have the opportunity to leave a lasting impact.
