System Review: The Bullet Journal Method

The Bullet Journal Method, Ryder Carroll

Review by Ben

How does this system work?

Fundamentally, the system works by re-organising how you can bullet point. It encourages hand writing notes, tasks and deadlines whilst also tackling the obstacles to hand writing, i.e. messy writing and shorthand which can disrupt organisation. The system solves this, creating a new language for the bullet point to-do list – ‘Rapid Logging’. ‘Rapid Logging’ uses symbols accompanying sentences, instead of the conventional bullet point. This is designed to get you to quickly recognise priorities in your working day.

How easy was it to get the hang of following the system?

Very easy! All you need is a pen/pencil and a notebook. The book is an easy to understand manual in what could be an overly-explained concept.

How did you find following it?

Great! I enjoy being creative and often end up doodling around my to-do lists – a force of habit. So, when this system encouraged creativity and guided me towards effectively using drawing and symbols for organisation rather than cluttering lists, a force of habit became a strength in regards to my time management.

What was its best feature?

It is very adaptable and allows for great personalisation i.e. if you like drawing, you can feed this into how you plan a working day into more importantly, a manageable day. Check out how creative bullet journals can get.

What was its worst feature?

I have none! I would highly recommend.

Who would you recommend this system to?

Everyone! The book encourages the bullet point list to take on a new form of being both diary and to-do list. Combing these two things is a liberating way to organise time allowing for personal reflection of work, ambitions and life outside of work/study.

Any other thoughts?

Do google the art of bullet journaling and dig into the community the book has created – you’ll be amazed at some of the lists people create. If anything, find inspiration for how you can tailor this book to fit your day, work and ambitions.
