The Smithsonian Institution, based in Washington, USA, is celebrating 250 years since the birth of James Smithson, a former student at Pembroke College.

Known at the time as James Macie, Smithson (1764-1829) came to Pembroke in 1782, obtaining an MA in 1786.

The BBC has published an article called Why the Smithsonian almost didn't exist, which tells the tale of the fortunate events that led to the founding of the Institution.

The Smithsonian, founded in 1846, is the largest museum and research complex in the world, with 19 museums and galleries, a National Zoological Park and nine research facilities.
