Pembroke MCR Statement on Black Lives Matter

NEWS |

The Pembroke MCR wholeheartedly condemns racism, in any of its forms. The murder of George Floyd is just the latest in a storied history of violent acts inflicted on the black community by white power brokers. It has forced white society to understand their obliviousness as complicity in a way their privilege previously allowed them to remain blissfully ignorant of. This is not new and we as part of an institution do a disservice to the memory of Mr Floyd and countless others if we do not do the hard thing and work to make lasting change in how we exist in this racist world. The MCR cannot afford for this moment to be rendered transient.

We see the level of force used against protestors in the US as nothing but abhorrent. At the same time, we also recognise that racism is not solely concentrated in the USA. The UK is also guilty of practising institutionalised and systemic racism, evident in all walks of life for Black people and those from other minority groups. For instance, from the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic we witnessed widespread racism against Asian communities. We stand in solidarity with all those who suffer under this systemic discrimination, but accept that symbolic gestures are not enough.

The Pembroke MCR recognises that we are part of an educational institution that has profited from racism in its past and continues to profit from it, while acknowledging our ongoing inadequacies in addressing these issues. We are conscious of having a privileged voice and strive to use it to promote inclusiveness and foster an anti-racist community. We also recognize that racism can be subtle, and can take place in everyday as well as virtual spaces.  It has never been more important for us to stand together as a community and in support of all our BAME members, particularly our Black members at this time. Despite what may feel like a hostile system, we want every member of our community to feel welcome and valued.

While our committee is at the end of its term, we have put together a preliminary action plan that works towards promoting anti-racism in our community. We will:

Carry out fundraising for charities fighting against racism. Set up a book fund, which will allow the price of books discussing racial inequality to be recouped from the MCR. Raise awareness of racism by publishing an infographic showing how some behaviours and statements can be unintentionally offensive and discriminatory. Organise talks featuring Black speakers, or those involved in working in the fight against racism. Ensure the inclusion of a diverse range of films in our future screenings, including topics pertinent to anti-racism.

We have also compiled a list of resources (which has been circualted to MCR members) for anyone seeking to broaden their understanding of racism, or looking for active ways they can engage in anti-racism.

We would like to remind those in the Pembroke MCR community that welfare and BAME reps are available and are happy to talk about any of these issues or anything else of concern. We might not always get it right but we are trying, and will remain receptive to both corrections and suggestions both from inside and outside our community.
