Many congratulations to Andrew Ahern (Ó hEachteirn), Pembroke Lecturer in Applied Mathematics, for being awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research with the Living Matter Lab at Stanford University.

The Fulbright Scholarship is one of the most prestigious international education award programmes in the world. It is named after former United States Senator J. William Fulbright, also Pembroke alumnus and founder of the Fulbright Program. Annual distinguished lectures commemorating Fulbright are regularly delivered at Pembroke, alongside other renowned educational institutions.

Andrew is currently a PhD candidate in Mathematics and a Clarendon Scholar at the University of Oxford. His research involves the use of mathematical modelling and analysis to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of toxic protein spread in Alzheimer’s disease. As a Fulbright Student Awardee, he will conduct a theoretical research project on the role of cerebrovascular damage in the accumulation and propagation of amyloid proteins at Stanford.

Pembroke’s Academic Director Nancy Braithwaite comments: “I would like to congratulate Andrew on being given this prestigious award and this great opportunity to focus on his exciting research.  During the year he has been with us as a College Lecturer (Career Development) he has made a very positive impact and is highly regarded as an excellent tutor of Maths. We will miss him, but are delighted for him!”
