New Pembroke Scholarship Renamed In Memory of Dr Holger Kramer

NEWS |

We are pleased to announce the renaming of the College’s Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry to the Holger Kramer Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship has been named in memory of Dr Holger Kramer, a former Biochemistry tutor at Pembroke who died suddenly last year.

Alongside a successful research career, Holger taught undergraduates at Pembroke for nearly ten years. He was much-loved by colleagues and students throughout the College who remember with deep fondness his expertise, his commitment to his students, and his great kindness. A full tribute published last summer can be found here.

The naming of this scholarship recognises Holger’s dedication to teaching and to furthering study and research in his field. Pembroke is deeply grateful to Holger and the many ways he served our community.

James Eaton, who currently holds the scholarship, writes of the impact it has had on his studies:

“I am thoroughly grateful for the Holger Kramer Memorial Scholarship which is enabling me to work towards my PhD. My PhD research uses the technique of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to study biological systems. Most recently, I have been using the technique to study proteins which form membrane-less organelles (MLOs). MLOs are small compartments found within cells; however, little is known about their function in biology. Throughout the rest of my research, I hope to obtain vital information about the formation and function of MLOs.”

If you would like to help us achieve a lasting memorial for Holger by ensuring that this award is available to support more students in the future, please get in touch with  development@pmb.ox.ac.uk.
