Dr Rob Johnson publishes new book on Lawrence of Arabia

Dr Rob Johnson, director of the Changing Character of War (CCW) Centre at Pembroke, has released a new book titled ‘Lawrence of Arabia on War’ published by Osprey Publishing.

Lawrence of Arabia on War offers a high-paced evaluation and retelling of T. E. Lawrence’s life and the British military operations in the Near East during the latter half of the First World War. The book both revises conventional narratives in order to tell the full story of T.E. Lawrence and studies the nature of guerrilla warfare in the desert as well as the manner in which Lawrence and others assessed what was changing, what was distinctive, and what was unique to the desert environment.

The book builds on a number of academic articles that Dr Rob Johnson has written focusing on the Middle East in the First World War. Setting Lawrence in his historical context, Dr Johnson examines Lawrence’s greatest contribution to military thought and practice as well as the peace settlement he participated in, and describes the ways in which his legacy has informed and inspired those partnering and mentoring local forces to the present day.

The book was officially released on April the 30th.
