From Cool Japan to Cold Japan: Grime Cyborgs in Black Britain

NEWS |

Congratulations to Pembroke DPhil student Warren A. Stanislaus, who had his article “From Cool Japan to Cold Japan: Grime Cyborgs in Black Britain” published in the Japan Forum, the official journal of the British Association for Japanese Studies.

In the article, Warren unearths the links between UK grime music and Japanese video games and anime in order to re-examine transnational flows of Japanese pop culture, Black British identity formation in the 21st century, and cultural hybridisation.

Published in February 2022, the piece has already reached the Top 10 ‘Most Read’ in the journal and has been featured in the Japan Society Chairman’s Blog; Complex; TRENCH; Asia Society; and the Royal Historical Society Blog.

As a Tanaka Graduate Scholar, Warren thanked the Tanaka Memorial Foundation and Pembroke College within the acknowledgements, and presented this paper in Japanese to the students at Technos College as part of their 2022 Virtual Pembroke Study Tour.

The article is open access and can be read here.
