Junior Dean

Pembroke College wishes to appoint an additional Junior Dean for a fixed-term period from late August 2026 until 31 August 2027.

The Junior Dean will join an active Decanal and Welfare Team within the College, comprising the Dean, Deputy Dean, Academic Director, Chaplain, Academic Office, Welfare Lead, Student Support and Wellbeing Tutor, the Junior Dean Team (of three other Junior Deans), and the Lodge team. The team works collaboratively to promote and support the wellbeing of all students, and maintains contact with Fellows and College staff at all levels.

The successful candidate will be a mature, responsible individual and an excellent communicator, able to set a positive example within the College community. They must be confident in making judgements, willing to challenge when necessary, proactive, and capable of thinking on their feet as situations arise.

The role has a disciplinary element to it but the importance of providing pastoral support to students has become more of a priority. Experience has shown that disciplinary matters are often linked to welfare and wellbeing issues. The inclusion of “Welfare and Wellbeing” in the formal job title reflects the need to clearly signpost to students that the Junior Dean is a key member of the welfare team.

The Junior Dean will be expected to be working towards a graduate degree at the University of Oxford during their employment, and must remain a student at the University for the entirety of their contract. They will be required to reside in College accommodation (free of charge), will receive free meals while the kitchens are open, and a stipend of £2,345 per annum.

For full details please refer to the Job Description below.

To apply, please send a covering letter explaining why you consider yourself suitable for the role and the qualities you could bring, and full curriculum vitae by email to the HR team by 12noon on Friday, 1 May 2026.

Applicants should also send the names, addresses and telephone numbers of three referees and arrange for their referees to write directly to the HR team by the same date. If the applicant is a registered graduate student, one of the referees must be the applicant’s University Supervisor.

Safeguarding

Pembroke College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check before taking up the post, along with pre-employment safeguarding checks, and will be required to undertake Safeguarding and First Aid training following their appointment.
