Dr Muhammad Meki
I am a development economist, holding a joint post between the Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS). At OCIS, I am the Fellow Investment Bursar and responsible for overseeing management of the endowment fund. I am also affiliated with the Centre for the Study of African Economies (CSAE) and I am an Associate Member of the Department of Economics.
I completed my PhD at the Department of Economics, Oxford, and first joined Pembroke as a Rokos Junior Research Fellow in 2018. I have also completed postgraduate degrees in finance (LSE), economics (Cambridge), and development economics (Oxford).
At ODID, I supervise students on the MSc in Economics for Development, and I teach a course on microfinance and cash transfer programs. In my research, I am in interested in how financial services can improve the lives of low-income households, with a specific focus on supporting small businesses in developing countries with financial products that are better tailored to their needs. I have conducted fieldwork in Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kenya, and Pakistan.
Prior to academia I worked in financial markets, for Bank of America in London and Deutsche Bank in Singapore, where I traded European and Asian government bonds, foreign exchange derivatives and other fixed-income products.
