Dr Gehan Gunatilleke
I am a Junior Research Fellow in Religion and Frontier Challenges, and an Early Career Fellow at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights. I am also a lawyer specialising in constitutional law and public law in Sri Lanka, and am a founding partner of LexAG, a law firm based in Colombo.
My research interests are in religious freedom, free speech, inter-group violence, and social cohesion. I was drawn to Pembroke’s Religion and Frontier Challenges Programme because of my interest in exploring the relationship between religion and social cohesion. My research project during my fellowship focuses on the role played by inter-faith actors in promoting social cohesion at the community level. My research will contribute to a book project on religious violence and constitutionalism in Sri Lanka.
Prior to commencing my fellowship, I was a visiting fellow at the Programme on Law and Society in the Muslim World at Harvard Law School. I am also a visiting lecturer in human rights and democratisation at the Centre for the Study of Human Rights at the University of Colombo.
