
Dr Gehan Gunatilleke
I am an international human rights lawyer and scholar focusing on religious liberty and free speech and am currently working on a book titled ‘Reimagining the Limits of Free Speech under International Law’. I first came to Pembroke College as a Junior Research Fellow in the Religion and the Frontier Challenges Programme (2022-2024). I was also an Early Career Fellow at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights and have previously taught courses in human rights to visiting undergraduates at New College and St Catherine’s College. In 2023, I was appointed a Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and continue to serve in that capacity in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I am also a senior partner at LexAG, a law firm based in Colombo and a former advisor to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs where I advised the government on international treaty compliance. I have a Master’s in International Human Rights Law from New College and DPhil in Law from St. Catherine’s College. I also have an LL.M from Harvard Law School, where I was a Fulbright Scholar.
