Dr Chris J Nicholls

College Lecturer in Engineering at Pembroke College; Lecturer in Engineering at Jesus College; Post-doctoral research assistant at the Oxford Thermofluids Institute; Junior Research Fellow at Trinity College

I completed my undergraduate degree in engineering at Hertford College (Oxford) before moving to Lincoln College for my DPhil in active flow control at the Oxford Thermofluids Institute. I’ve been a post-doc since 2021 and hold a Junior Research Fellowship at Trinity College from October 2022. My research is focused on applying ideas in signal processing and control theory to solve problems in fluid mechanics. Specifically, our group studies fluidic devices, fluid logic elements that can be used to control fluid flows in aerospace applications. Finding an analogy between a concept in information theory and a phenomenon in fluids is very satisfying! I teach first year students at Pembroke in the electronic and information engineering paper. Our students are bright and enthusiastic, and sitting down to discuss engineering with them every week is an intellectually stimulating experience – both for student and tutor!
