Congratulations to Pembroke DPhil Student Warren A. Stanislaus (2017, DPhil History) who was awarded the 2022 Ian Nish Prize for his article “From Cool Japan to Cold Japan: Grime Cyborgs in Black Britain” (2022). The Ian Nish Prize is awarded annually for the best article by an early career scholar in any discipline of Japanese Studies published in the Japan Forum, the journal of the British Association for Japanese Studies. 

Warren's article explores links between UK grime music and Japanese video games and anime in order. He seeks to re-examine transnational flows of Japanese pop culture, Black British identity formation in the 21st century, and cultural hybridisation. Read more here.
