Thanksgiving Service held for Professor Robert Stevens

On 24th March a service of thanksgiving for the life of Professor Robert Stevens was held in the Oxford University Church. Professor Stevens, who came to Pembroke in 1993 and served as Master for eight years before being elected to Honorary Fellowship in 2001, died in January 2021 at the age of 87. Since his retirement, he lived locally and retained an active interest in the College.

Pembroke Emeritus Fellow in Law, Dr John Eekelaar, gave a tribute at the service and described Professor Stevens as having strong character and mischievous humour. He added: “... [Robert as Master] insisted on the importance of Oxford reaching out to children in state schools and having resources to assist those in any financial difficulty.”

Kathie Booth Stevens and her family were joined at the service by friends and former colleagues from Professor Stevens’ distinguished career in law and academia.  Many others around the world were able to follow proceedings via a livestream link.  Following the service, Oxford guests were invited to a reception in Pembroke’s Hall.

Professor Stevens is much missed by his many Pembroke friends and colleagues.
