Prof Nick Hawes appointed as MPLS Academic Champion

NEWS |

Congratulations to Professor Nick Hawes, Fellow and Tutor in Engineering, who has been appointed Academic Champion for Public Engagement with Research (PER) at Oxford’s Mathematical, Physical, and Life Sciences Division (MPLS).

The second holder of the role, which was created in late 2017, Nick will be in charge of refreshing and updating the division’s strategic plan for PER. He will be deploying his expertise and academic experience to help the division achieve aims such as encouraging more opportunities for PER, and overcoming barriers to expand and develop the research culture of the MPLS.

Discussing his new role at the MPLS, Nick commented; “Ever since taking part in my first Cheltenham Science Festival I’ve been excited by, and seen the broad benefits of, public engagement in research. This new role gives me the chance to work across the incredible MPLS community, sharing my views on these benefits, and helping to provide opportunities to others to engage the public at all stages of their research.

Without knowing MPLS colleagues from Pembroke I could not have even considered starting this role. The collegiate community really helps me understand the interests of, and demands on, academics working across physical and life sciences.”
