Pembroke students Excel in University Examinations

It has been another incredible year for Pembrokians academically; five of our students have been awarded prizes by the University’s Departments for their excellent performance in Prelims and Finals. They have received prizes in Experimental Psychology, Law, and Maths – a testament to the excellence of our tutors in these subjects and the hard work of their students.

Many congratulations to first-year students Shikhar Gupta (2025, Mathematics) and Anya Tindall (2025, Psychology and Philosophy) on receiving prizes for their performance in Prelims from the Oxford Mathematical Institute and the Department of Experimental Psychology respectively.

Shuhan Qi (2023, Experimental Psychology) was commended for submitting the ‘Best Library Dissertation in the Final Honour School of Experimental Psychology’ while Breanna Stone (2024, Experimental Psychology) was awarded the Wiskrantz Prize for the Best Overall Performance in Part A, also for the Honour School of Experimental Psychology.

Shuhan's dissertation explored the question: How Does Culture Influence the Order and Timing of Theory of Mind Development? "I chose this topic because it combines my interests in theory of mind, cultural psychology, and developmental psychology," shared Shuhan. "Theory of mind—the ability to infer others’ thoughts, beliefs, and desires—is fundamental to navigating the social world. I am particularly interested in examining the influence of culture through a developmental psychology lens, as social environments are inseparable from culture, and this perspective allows us to better understand how cultural experiences shape the development of theory of mind from an early age."

Congratulations also go to Olivia McConnell (2022, Jurisprudence) who has been awarded an astounding three prizes by the Faculty of Law. She has received the Martin Wronker Proxime prize for the second-best overall performance in the FHS, the Gibbs Book Prize, and the Law Faculty Prize in Comparative Law. 

“Studying law at Pembroke has been a challenging but highly rewarding experience,” shares Olivia. “What I’ve enjoyed most is how often the subject makes you stop and look at a question you thought you understood from a different perspective. Tutorials reminded me that there's always another argument to consider, or another way of thinking about a problem, which is what has kept me so interested in it.

I’m very grateful for the encouragement and support I’ve had from my tutors and friends at Pembroke, and for the freedom I’ve been given to explore the areas of law that I found most interesting. Receiving these prizes is a lovely recognition of the work I’ve put in, but I think what I’ll take away most from my time at Pembroke is the curiosity it has given me, and the feeling that there is always more to learn.”
