Former Lord Chief Justice and Pembroke alumnus and Honorary Fellow Lord Burnett of Maldon (1976, Jurisprudence) has been appointed by King Charles to the prestigious Order of the Garter, one of Britain’s oldest and most senior honours.

Founded by Edward III in 1348, inspired by tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, the Order of the Garter is celebrated annually with a traditional procession and service at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Lord Burnett was joined by two other members of the House of Lords, Lord Peter Hennessy and Lord Augustine Thomas O’Donnell, who all had the honour bestowed upon them on St George’s Day.

Chosen by the King, the Order’s Knights and Lady companions are individuals who have made significant contributions to national life, held public office, or served the monarch directly.

At the age of 59, Lord Burnett became the youngest Lord Chief Justice since 1958 at his appointment in 2017. He is now one of 23 companions in the Order, with only 24 members allowed at any one time.

Many congratulations to Lord Burnett on receiving this prestigious honour.
