Pembroke Fellows Use AI & Robotics to Increase Biodiversity

NEWS |

Pembroke College Tutorial Fellow in Ecology, Assoc. Prof Roberto Salguero-Gómez, and Associate Fellow in Engineering Science, Professor Nick Hawes, participated in the Innovation Hub at the 2022 AWS Summit in London.

Following a partnership between the University of Oxford and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate advances in AI and Data Science across the entire research portfolio of the University, researchers from the Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI) as well as the Department of Biology have been collaborating to use AWS services to monitor, understand and predict biodiversity resilience.

In an interview with Prof. Sally Eaves, Dr Salguero-Gómez explains that they have been using drones and autonomous robots built by the ORI to monitor how grasslands in Wytham Woods are responding to different extreme events, such as droughts and flooding.

Dr Salguero-Gómez ultimately hopes that this project can be implemented in remote areas that need this monitoring the most, namely tropical forests, deserts and tundras, which are all highly vulnerable to climate change projections.

Watch the interview here,  where Dr Salguero-Gómez discusses the full project in more detail and gives advice for students looking to get into this area of research.
