Celebrating Success: Magnus Eldrup

NEWS |

We continue our 2023 Celebrating Success series with Pembroke student Magnus Eldrup (2022, MSc Economics for Development). Magnus has been awarded the Luca D’Agliano Prize for Best Dissertation by the MSc in Economics for Development Exam Board. His dissertation is titled: ‘Optimal Tax Thresholds in Tanzania: A Structural Approach’.

Magnus’ work seeks to reconcile existing optimal taxation literature with the unique constraints facing policymakers in developing countries today. Magnus explains: “By building a complex structural model, I am able to simulate the interplay between employment, formality, and the tax schedule. When applying this model to data from Tanzania, I can extract some broad policy recommendations. With further research, it is my hope that these stylized policy rules can help create tax systems that more efficiently alleviate inequalities within developing countries.”

Magnus comments on his recent achievement: “I am overjoyed to receive this award. Given the immense talent of my cohort, I feel a profound sense of pride in being chosen for this honour. I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to move towards publication of my work in the near future.”

Reflecting on his time at Pembroke, Magnus shares: “My time at Pembroke was truly exceptional. While the College offered unwavering academic support, it's the memories of great friendships, spirited Mario Kart tournaments, and invigorating rowing outings that remain etched in my mind. These experiences enriched my journey, making it an unforgettable chapter of my life."
