Celebrating Success: Kathleen Wang

NEWS |

Kathleen Wang (2018, Jurisprudence) has recently excelled in her university final exams, achieving a first, ranking 5th in her cohort and receiving the Falcon Chambers Prize for best performance in land law. We caught up with Kathleen, who shared her experience at Pembroke as well as advice for future applicants considering a degree in Law.

“As an international student, the thought of adjusting to a new country and teaching system seemed daunting at first, but looking back, the past three years at Pembroke have been some of my best. The welcoming atmosphere and the various resources in college gave me the opportunity to challenge myself academically, and form close friendships extending beyond university.

My favorite aspect of studying at Pembroke is undoubtedly the challenging, yet intellectually stimulating, tutorials throughout the course. The tutorials allowed me to explore the nuances and underlying tensions behind what initially appear to be simple concepts, and the tutors I've had at Pembroke challenged us, in the best way, to critically engage with the material and made the course truly enjoyable.

Aside from my studies, I was also involved with the Oxford University Asia-Pacific Society and the Oxford Undergraduate Law Journal, where I served as Co-President and Senior Associate Editor, respectively. Through these opportunities, I was able to meet other students from diverse backgrounds and areas of study, and gain new perspectives both in and outside my course.

For any prospective applicants, my biggest advice is to read widely, and think critically. Reading and cross-analysing from a variety of different sources can help put issues in perspective, and may ultimately inform the themes and debates in the law. Pembroke is a great place to develop these skills, and I can't recommend it enough for those considering a degree in law!”
