Universal Synaesthesia

PAST EVENT | 21 May 2014 18:30

The Experiential Society, a platform for discussion and research on multisensory experience design, will hold its first ever event in Oxford here in Pembroke.  Three leaders in research in this field will give talks on their perspective on Universal Synaesthesia.

Professor Charles Spence is Head of the Crossmodal Research Laboratory here at the University of Oxford. He is interested in how people perceive the world around them; in particular, how our brains manage to process the information from each of our different senses (smell, taste, sight, hearing and touch) to form the extraordinarily rich multisensory experiences that fill our daily lives.

Professor Barry Smith is Director of the Institute of Philosophy in the School of Advanced Study, University of London, where he co-directs the Centre for the Study of the Senses. He works with psychologists, neurologists and neuroscientists on flavour perception and is co-organiser of an international research project on the Nature of Taste, jointly run by the University of London and NYU.

Dr Ophelia Deroy is Associate Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Senior Researcher at the Centre for the Study of the Senses. She specialises in issues related to the interactions between the senses – how they come together to provide us with the perception of everyday objects or events, and how they contribute to our perception of ourselves and others.

This event is open to all. Tickets cost £5 (£3 for Pembroke students) - email experiential.society@gmail.com to book.

To secure a special invitation to an additional experience on the day of the event watch the film on this page, decipher the phrase and include it in your email with your booking request.
