LCLC & MCLC Language Summer School
PAST EVENT | 27 June 2016 12:56 - 29 June 2016 15:00
The LCLC & MCLC year ends with a three-day residential Summer School, held at Pembroke. It is an intensive experience for a small number of selected participants, and gives the opportunity to experience what it is like to study languages at university. Pupils are set essays by postgraduate students in their chosen language, which they complete with access to extensive resources, and with the assistance of undergraduate mentors. The Sumer School culminates in a traditional Oxford tutorial, in which the pupils are expected to discuss and defend their essay with their postgraduate tutor. This challenging but highly rewarding experience gives students an unrivalled opportunity to speak directly with an expert on their work, and gives them a taste of a unique element of the Oxford academic experience.
In addition, a parallel Summer School runs for teachers, bringing together teachers of several different languages from a variety of schools. The programme focuses on enhancing language teachers' pedagogical and subject knowledge. Teachers have the opportunity to utilize the huge resources of the University of Oxford, through the use of the Taylorian Institute.
Previous summer schools have brought together pupils of Arabic, French, Gernamn, Italian and Spanish, to study topics such as the literature of the Mexican Revolution, the Arabic Spring and Baudelaire's Les fleurs du mal. Prizes are awarded to students for their performace in the essays and tutorials.
This year, the LCLC & MCLC Language Summer School will take place from Monday 27th - Wednesday 29th June. Places for the school are already full.
