About Paula Dhiman:

"I am a Senior Research Fellow in Medical Statistics at Oxford University and an amateur photographer in my free time. I noticed my love for photography when I would find myself spending unlimited amounts of time taking photos of random bugs I would see on the street or in the garden.

Having spent years taking photos with my phone, I struggled to get close enough to my subjects and capture the detail that I wanted. During the pandemic, I decided to buy my first professional camera and immediately invested in a macro lens. After attending some photography courses, I would mostly be found with my camera in tow and searching for animals, birds, bugs, and everything in between.

Photography is powerful. It gives me moments of quiet, stillness and peace as I zoom into worlds I would not otherwise see. Taking photos is a wonderful process - it’s writing with light. I love the ability to not only capture a ‘subject’, but a moment, an expression, a feeling. I also like to think that the subjects in all my photos enjoy their moment in the limelight too as they lap up the attention!"

About the exhibition:

"Big World, Small World is an uplifting exhibition showcasing the importance of the little things in both life and that live around us. It offers a moment to pause, acknowledge and appreciate all life that exists, no matter how small. So often we get caught up in our own worlds and lives that we often overlook the beauty of the everyday and the small things in it that bring so much joy. We get so busy trying to move mountains, that we forget the value of stones and pebbles.

Taking each of the exhibited photos brought me to the present moment as I saw the world through my camera lens. It allowed me to focus, discover and zoom into a whole world that lives around us and supports us in so many ways as we casually go about our day. Each photo left me with a positive feeling as I observed all the life around me also casually going about its day - sometimes there was a sense of peace, sometimes it was hope, sometimes it was excitement, but it always came with a new perspective of the world and me in it, which was humbling. With Big World, Small World, I wanted to share the experience that taking these photos gave me and the joy they offer. The exhibition is a reminder of all the life in and around us as we beautifully coexist and why we need to protect it.

I hope you enjoy the exhibition and find something in each photo you can take away and keep with you for time to come and if anything, to get you through the winter months!"
