Dr Michael Finch
I am a Research Associate in Modern History for Michaelmas Term 2024. I have a long association with Pembroke College, having completed my BA Hons (2001-4), MSt (2005-6) and DPhil (2006-10) at the college, all of which were in Modern History. Between 2011 and 2013 I was the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the History of War, a Research Associate with the Changing Character of War Programme, and an Associate Fellow at Pembroke. Since then I have taught and researched at the Defence Studies Department, King's College London, the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University, and I am now Senior Lecturer in the History of War and Strategy at the Deakin University Centre for Future Defence and National Security.
My research focuses on strategic and military thinking and its connections with thinkers and with the conduct of war. My earlier work concerned the relationship between the theory and practice of war, with particular reference to irregular warfare and French historical experiences. More recent work encompasses the investigation of ideas and concepts, disciplinary, biographical and intellectual history and historiography. I am increasingly drawn towards thinking about theorists and texts in historical context and their legacies and influence. My recent book Making Makers looks at the history of a seminal book in thinking about war and strategy, and how it was made and remade over the course of the twentieth century.
