Pembroke College North West Essay Prize
The Pembroke College North West Essay Prize is open to state school students in the North West of England, who are entering Year 12 or Year 13 in September 2023.
Entries for the 2022 competition are now closed.
Entries for 2023 will open next summer.
The competition aims to support and inspire the next generation of undergraduate students as they consider their university choices.
All essay questions were suggested by current undergraduates, and will be marked by the College’s postgraduate students, with feedback provided to all eligible participants.
Prize
Prizes of £100 in book tokens for the winner and £50 in book tokens for the runner-up in each category.
There will also be a celebration held at Pembroke College, during the Oxford University Open Day in September..
Feedback will be provided to all eligible participants of the essay prize.
How to enter
The Pembroke North West Essay Prize has a number of essay questions within the three categories of Humanities, Science and Social Science.

In 2022, the competition was open to students entering Year 12 or 13 from a state school or sixth form college in the North West of England. Only one entry per student was accepted.
Essays should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words and the word count should be stated at the end. A bibliography should be supplied and all quotations cited.
