‘Super Sapiens’ card game launched by DPhil student Alexa Virdi
NEWS |
Congratulations to Alexa Virdi (2014, DPhil Law) who recently launched Super Sapiens, a social enterprise that creates inclusive and fun educational card games for children. Super Sapiens explores the stories of some of history’s global female icons, uncovers hidden histories and seeks to cultivate understanding.
Super Sapiens consists of a total of 54 cards, which includes 12 matching sets of 4 illustrated cards of emboldening women from around the world, 2 cards with a world map showcasing where these women come from and 4 cards with tips for how to ‘cultivate superpowers’ through self-care. Custom made cards are also available to order with the game, that buyers can personalise to feature their own family/friends.
A 3-in-1 game, Super Sapiens features a traditional ‘snap’ style game, a memory based game where the goal is to turn cards over and look for a match, and a ‘guess who’ style game where others try to figure out who is on your card.
Alexa, who designed the game after initially creating games for family and friends last year, has pledged to donate 20% of post-Kickstarter profits to charity, with the game also being produced via a conscious, ethical supply chain. Part of the proceeds will fund a Pembroke access Summer School place for a Bermudian student. Copies of the game will also be donated to schools in Oxford and Bermuda.
If Super Sapiens proves to be a success, Alexa is planning to launch future variations of the game, including editions featuring inspiring women from all the regions of the world, such as Super Sapiens – Africa, Super Sapiens – Asia Pacific, and Super Sapiens - South Asia.
Alexa commented: “I really wanted our multi-heritage daughter to be able to play a game where she could see more people who look like her. It is important to have an age appropriate way to help to show her that we are all part of the same human race whilst at the same time introducing her to the global achievements of women, the legacies of history, and realities of privilege”.
