Professor Lynda Mugglestone Receives Prestigious Harvard Fellowship
NEWS |
Earlier this year, Professor Lynda Mugglestone, Pembroke Fellow in English Language and Literature, was awarded a Harvard University Houghton Library Visiting Fellowship for the duration of the upcoming academic year.
The Donald and Mary Hyde Fellowship for the Study of Dr. Samuel Johnson and his Circle will allow Professor Mugglestone to continue her research into renowned Pembroke alumnus Samuel Johnson, author of the first comprehensive English dictionary. She hopes that the fellowship will underpin the writing of a new book on the concept of garret lexicography and the material spaces of writing.
In the meantime, you can learn more about Professor Mugglestone’s research into the famous lexicographer’s desk at ‘Desks, Drudgery and the Dictionary’, a new exhibition at Dr Johnson’s House in London. Building on some significant new findings about how the Dictionary was written, the exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to see the real (or perhaps fake!) ‘dictionary desk’ and explore the history – and mystery – behind it.
Find out more about the exhibition here.
