Preeti Simpson Medical Society hosts first speaker event
NEWS |
Earlier this Hilary, the Preeti Simpson Medical Society, established in 2024 in honour of Pembroke Medicine alumna Preeti Simpson, held its first event, bringing together Pembroke's Medicine students and alumni.
Preeti Simpson studied at Pembroke from 1995, going on to qualify and practice as a doctor before she sadly died in 2010. In 2021, fellow Pembroke alumna and CEO of the IMEX Group, Carina Bauer, alongside Preeti’s family and other generous donors, set up the Preeti Simpson Fund in her memory. The fund supports students to further their academic and professional development in order to make a successful start in their medical careers.
Described by Carina as “a true connector and a person who always put others first,” Preeti has left a lasting impact on the College community. Recognising this, the new Medical Society now bearing her name aims to foster a supportive medical community at Pembroke.
For the society's first event, Dr Konstilia Karydi, an anaeshetist working with Médecins Sans Frontières, spoke to Medicine students and alumni about her personal experience working in the humanitarian sector. “Having events where students, tutors and alumni can all meet is fundamental for the formation of stronger bonds intergenerationally and allowing for stronger mentorship opportunities,” one student shared.
Congratulations to Pembroke’s medical students currently on the PSMS committee – Matthew Partridge, Ariana Minea, Anne-Rosa Bilal, Elamin Ibrahim, Yusuf Aggour, Steph Webb, and Ariff Castronovo - who worked hard to make their first speaker event a reality.
The Society is also grateful for the support of Pembroke Medicine Fellows and Lecturers Professor Frederik Karpe, Dr Lois Brand, Dr Ed Mitchell, and Dr Richard Harrington.
