Pembroke Undergraduates Travel to Japan for Prestigious Technos International Event
NEWS |
‘Technos International Week’ is an important annual event in Japan that promotes international exchange and understanding between international participants and the students of Technos International College. The trip offers the chance to experience and appreciate Japanese life and culture.
Each year, four second year Pembroke undergraduates along with one member of the teaching faculty are given the opportunity to travel to the country and participate in the event.
The 2016 students were Dominic Saad (Medicine, 2014), Harriet Loney (Medicine – Preclinical, 2014), Jamie Engineer (English Language and Literature, 2014), Lydie Sheehan (Arabic & Islamic Studies, 2013), who travelled with Pembroke’s Home Bursar Mike Naworynsky. These are some of their reflections on the experience:
‘Never in my life have I experienced such varied culture, hospitality or sheer wonder as I did on my two-week visit to the college in June 2016...’ - Dominic Saad
‘After a few hours everyone on the bus turned to face to the left and the sight of Mt. Fuji in the distance is something I will never forget…’ - Harriet Loney
‘We all made great friends, took part in their classes, and learnt all about the lives of our parallel peers from the other side of the globe…’ - Jamie Engineer
‘It had long been a dream of mine to visit Japan; I had studied Japanese in secondary school and had corresponded with Japanese family friends for my entire life…’ - Lydie Sheehan
Full personal reports summarising their experiences are available here. These reports document an array of unique and enriching insights into Japanese life and culture, which the students gained whilst there.
Members of the college community are invited to attend an upcoming event where last year’s participants will be speaking about their experiences of ‘Technos International Week 2016’ on Wednesday 30th November at 5pm in the Mary Hyde Eccles Room in the Samuel Johnson Building.
Applications for 2017 are now open and will close Friday 27th January. Information on how to apply is available to students via the College Intranet.
