We are delighted to announce that Pembroke undergraduates Alice Campbell Davis (BA Jurisprudence, 2018) and Tilman Koops (BA Jurisprudence, 2018) were triumphant in this year's Undergraduate Inter-collegiate (Cuppers) Mooting Competition.

The Maitland Chambers University of Oxford Undergraduate Inter-collegiate (Cuppers) Mooting Competition is organised by the Law Faculty in conjunction with the Law Joint Consultative Committee, and proudly supported by Maitland Chambers. Up to thirty-two teams may represent their colleges in Rounds I and II of the five-round contest.

In this year’s tournament, 24 colleges competed over the two preliminary rounds. The eight top-ranked teams in the preliminary rounds then advanced to the elimination rounds, comprising of quarter finals, semifinals and a Grand Final.

In the preliminary rounds, Pembroke College was represented by second-year law students Tilman Koops, Allyna Ng (BA Jurisprudence, 2017), and Alice Campbell Davis who went on to secure victories over New College and Brasenose College, advancing to the elimination rounds. Alice and Tilman represented Pembroke in the elimination rounds, in which they beat St John’s College in the quarter final and Exeter College in the semi-final. The Grand Final saw Pembroke take on Harris Manchester College. The case concerned the rules governing equitable compensation for breach of trust and was judged by Edwin Johnson QC, Michael Gibbon QC and Benjamin John, barristers at Maitland Chambers. After a close contest, Timothy Foot and Jordan Briggs of Harris Manchester College were announced as runners-up, with Pembroke’s undergraduates emergerging victorious.

Alice and Tilman commented:

“Mooting is a fantastic educational experience: you learn how to think on your feet, argue persuasively, and respond spontaneously to tricky questions. It also great fun to work as a team on knotty legal problems. We would recommend it to everyone!”
