Pembroke Students and Staff Run in Honour of Sir Roger Bannister
NEWS |
Seventy-two years after Sir Roger Bannister ran his record-breaking mile at Iffley Track, Pembroke students and staff came together this week to run in honour of Bannister’s contributions to athletics, to neurology, and to this College.

Roger Bannister became a household name in 1954 when, while training as a junior doctor, he became the first man to run a mile in under four minutes. Over the next three decades he would dedicate himself to the field of neurology, publishing over 80 papers and receiving numerous honours. Then, in 1985, he returned to Oxford to become Master of Pembroke College.

The Bannister Miles, this year sponsored by Pembroke, mark the anniversary of Roger Bannister running the first sub-four-minute mile at the Iffley Track in Oxford. Now in its third year, the 2026 Bannister Community Mile saw over 1,300 members of the public take to Oxford’s streets on Monday 4th May to run a mile from St Aldate’s to Iffley Track. With more participants than any other college, Pembroke was represented at the run by dozens of students and staff donning Pembroke pink.

Thomas Renshaw, event Co-Director shared, "Bannister Miles, year on year, continues to grow and I would like to thank Pembroke this year for sponsoring the event. Not only did Pembroke help to make it all possible they also turned out in force with over 50 members of the College running the Community Mile. We hope that this event is a fulfilling celebration of Sir Roger Bannister’s life and legacy. A man who was firstly an academic and secondly an elite athlete, who recognised the benefit that sport could bring to communities across the country. Thank you Pembroke for helping us to continue this legacy."
Just metres from the Community Mile’s start line, the stopwatch which was used to time Sir Roger’s famous mile is now proudly on display at Pembroke as part of a collection memorabilia kindly gifted to the College by the Bannister family.

During his time as Master, Sir Roger oversaw monumental changes to the College estate; played an instrumental role, along with his wife Lady Moyra Bannister, in strengthening relationships with our American students; introduced the College Garden Party, now a firm fixture in the College calendar; and saw academic and sporting success across the student body. His name remains part of the fabric of College, both in the Bannister Building which houses undergraduates, and in the Sir Roger Bannister Scholarship and the Bannister Medical Scholarship, awarded to students each year.
It was privilege to honour Sir Roger by supporting and running the Bannister Community Mile in his memory this week.
