Pembroke Graduate Speaks at UN Human Rights Council

NEWS |

Eleanor McClelland, a recent alumna of Pembroke College, gave statements at the 30th session of the UN Human Rights Council on Friday 18th and Monday 22nd September on behalf of the Union of Arab Jurists and Geneva International Centre for Justice.

Formerly an undergraduate student in Arabic at Pembroke, Eleanor completed an M.Stud in Oriental Studies (focus on ‘Human Rights’) with us this summer. She is currently undertaking an internship with the Geneva International Centre for Justice, an NGO that focusses on human rights in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq.

Speaking to the College, Eleanor explained that her statements aimed to draw the Council’s attention to "the systemic nature of human rights abuse in Iraq and the current human rights situation in Palestine", noting the neglect of the international community in regard to ongoing human rights violations in these regions.
