Pembroke DPhil student, Warren Stanislaus, awarded in Rare Rising Stars 2019

Congratulations to current DPhil History student and Tanaka Graduate scholar, Warren Stanislaus (DPhil History, 2017) who was recently awarded 3rd place in this year’s Rare Rising Stars awards ceremony held at the Palace of Westminster in July.

Now in its eleventh year, Rare Rising Stars is a celebration of the achievements of the UK's best black students. The awards showcase the extraordinary achievements of the top 10 black students in the UK and aims to inspire the next generation and provide them with access to role models. The judging panel included: Trevor Phillips CBE, Kem Ihenacho, Sophie Chandauka, Tia Counts and Tom Chigbo.

Warren was recognised for his academic excellence and his 10+ years engagement with Japan as both a student and professional.

Warren commented, " I am so proud to have been placed third in the top ten black students in the UK and at the same time feel the weight of responsibility. These awards are so important and as winners we have a key role in inspiring the next generation. Especially, within the UK where representations of black youth are often negative or black excellence is narrowly defined within the realms of sport and entertainment. My goal is to become an academic researcher and lecturer specialising in East Asian Studies. I want to inspire and equip the next generation of Japan scholars in the UK."
