Pembroke DPhil Student Named ‘Clinician of the Year’ at 2024 Bone Idols Awards

Pembroke DPhil student (Clinical Neurosciences, 2022) and consultant nurse Gerard Mawhinney has been named 2024 'Clinician of the Year' at the “Bone Idols” awards, a national awards ceremony hosted by the Bone Cancer Research Trust to celebrate excellence in primary bone cancer care and research.

Gerard’s award comes in recognition of his dedication to treating and supporting primary bone cancer patients through their difficult journey, and his commitment to ensuring their wellbeing beyond treatment. "It is a privilege to work with patients and families living with spinal sarcoma,” he shared. “I am honoured to receive this award; it is a great personal achievement, but also national recognition for the dedicated work that the Oxford Spinal service provides."

Gerard works at the Department of Spinal Surgery at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of four national centres treating primary tumours of the spine. Alongside this clinical work, Gerard’s DPhil explores how precision oncology is implemented and experienced by people living with primary tumours of the brain and spine. He is also a member of the Faculty of Perioperative Care at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Research and Innovation Lead at the Association of Surgical Care Practitioners.

We would like to extend our warmest congratulations to Gerard on receiving this prestigious award.
