New Junior Research Fellowship Position in Partnership with the Smithsonian UK Charitable Trust and the Smithsonian Institution

NEWS |

Pembroke College is pleased to announce the creation of a new Junior Research Fellow position, funded in partnership with The Smithsonian U.K. Charitable Trust (UKCT) and the Smithsonian Institution; united by a common vision to support research related to science, history, art, education, culture, and technology for the purpose of advancing knowledge.

The Smithsonian was established with a gift from James Smithson, a notable alumnus of the College, for the ‘increase and diffusion of knowledge’ and has established museums, research centres and programmes dedicated to understanding and preserving our shared cultural heritage, encouraging contemporary cultural creativity, and understanding and sustaining the planet’s biodiversity.

With funding from the Smithsonian UKCT, Pembroke will establish an initial position for a one-year Junior Research Fellow to explore more fully and further develop the relationship between Pembroke, The University and the Smithsonian.

As pictured, Leslie Scott, an Associate at Pembroke College and Trustee of Smithsonian UK Charitable Trust and John Davis, Provost and Under Secretary for Museums, Education, and Research at the Smithsonian Institution, attended a meeting with Dame Lynne Brindley, Master of Pembroke College to sign the agreement.

Leslie commented:

‘In funding this first Pembroke/ Smithsonian JRF, the Smithsonian UK Charitable Trust’s ambition is to facilitate and support new and existing collaborative research and education projects between the Smithsonian Institution and Oxford University.’

The Smithsonian UKCT have a longstanding relationship with Pembroke College. Recently they offered several of our undergraduates the opportunity to undertake fieldwork in their research centre in Kenya. Find out more about this initiative in this article.
