New JCR and MCR Committees Elected for 2023-24

NEWS |

At the end of Trinity Term, the Junior and Middle Common Rooms (undergraduate and graduate student bodies) elected their new committees ahead of the 2023/24 academic year starting in October.

The committees of both common rooms are responsible to for running student societies and interdisciplinary initiatives, providing peer support, representing students on College committees and working with College staff and Fellows to make decisions. The committees also organise events throughout the year, from themed formal dinners to pantomimes and productions, biodiversity outreach activities and academic talks, as well as a programme of events during Freshers Week.

New committees are elected by their respective student bodies following hustings for each role.

Adam Sparkes, new MCR President, shares: “Pembroke MCR is an active and vibrant community. The new committee is thrilled to have taken up post and is already working hard to make sure Pembroke MCR remains as welcoming to you as it was to us. It’s an especially exciting year to be at Pembroke as we look toward its 400th anniversary. From showcasing the fantastic research of our members at our academic symposium to BOPs and Balls, the MCR really is at the heart of College life. Whether you’re a fresher or returning student, we look forward to seeing you!”

Incoming JCR President, Katrin Shabgard, adds: “The incoming committee and I are so excited to represent the undergraduate student body this upcoming academic year. We are going to continue to foster the welcoming community spirit that is the Pembroke JCR; with lots of exciting things planned for this year, such as the Commemoration Ball, and the highly anticipated return to Spirit for our bi-weekly BOPs. The collegiate system is one of the perks of being at Oxford, and it is such an honour to be involved with facilitating and maintaining a great college and wider university experience, ranging from entz to academics. The provision of welfare support is also of the utmost importance to our JCR and we are proud to be contributing to Pembroke and its’ student body both socially and academically.

Congratulations to all those newly elected, and thank you to those who have given time to serving the Pembroke community this year through the JCR and MCR committees.
