Music Undergraduate Reuben Tendler Wins Orchestral Composition Competition

NEWS |

Congratulations to Reuben Tendler (Music, 2019) who recently won a competition held by the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra and had his composition performed by an orchestra at the Sheldonian Theatre!

As part of the Oxford Beethoven Festival 2020, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra ran a competition for young composers to write a short orchestral piece entitled ‘A Hero’s Overture’. Discussing his process in creating the piece, Reuben stated: ‘Heroism is a common theme in much of Beethoven’s music, so my composition draws heavily on his style. However, I also see it as an outdated, idealistic concept, so I have juxtaposed the heroic themes with more modern musical techniques’.

Elaborating further on his victory in the competition, Reuben commented: ‘I was delighted to discover that I had won the competition. To have a composition performed live, especially in the Sheldonian, is a great honour. I am looking forward to improving my composition skills further over the course of studying music here at Pembroke.’

The piece was performed by the Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra on the evening of Saturday 25th of January.
