Dr Eamonn Molloy gives talk on Space for Technos College

NEWS |

Fellow and Tutor in Management, Dr Eamonn Molloy, delivered a virtual lecture titled ‘Old Space, New Space and Smart Space’ to students at Technos College in Japan, as part of Pembroke’s partnership with the College.

Due to the fact that students from Technos College were unable to visit us this year, this online talk served as an alternative. Delivered in both English and Japanese, the talk focused on both past and future development of space exploration, and the opportunities that it can provide. The lecture centred on the themes of international co-operation, innovation and safety as key factors to influence future space innovation. Following the talk, a Q&A took place where viewers had the opportunity to ask Dr Molloy about a wide range of questions relating to the topic.

Reflecting on the lecture and the topic that was discussed with Technos students online, Dr Molloy commented:

“Space has always fascinated humanity. It is a place of wonder and mystery, and also a sacred place to many cultures. Today, exploration of the universe continues but there is also accelerating interest in the exploitation of low earth orbit space for terrestrial applications such as telecommunications, climate monitoring and agriculture.

In addition, there’s growing interest in human settlements on the Moon and Mars, with hundreds of billions of dollars being invested by commercial organisations in this emerging market. There are many opportunities for science, technology and finance careers in this sector but also new challenges for International Relations and Governance of space as a resource for humanity.”
