A celebration of the life of Sir Roger Bannister CH CBE

The life of former Pembroke Master Sir Roger Bannister was celebrated at an extraordinary memorial ceremony that brought together the city, the county and University. The event took place yesterday, 14th November 2018, in the Sheldonian Theatre and was followed by a reception at the Town Hall, hosted by Oxford’s Lord Mayor.

Family, friends and colleagues gathered together to celebrate Sir Roger’s contributions to sport, medicine, academia and the city of Oxford. A modest and humble man, his legacy continues to inspire people all over the world.

The event honoured Sir Roger through tributes from guest speakers, including his daughter, The Rev’d Charlotte Bannister-Parker, Interim City Rector. HM Lord Lieutenant, Mr Tim Stevenson OBE, representing HRH Princess Alexandra, also spoke reflecting on Sir Roger’s enormous contribution to the city of Oxford and to the Nation. 

The Master of Pembroke College, Dame Lynne Brindley DBE, gave a warm speech on Sir Roger’s contributions to Pembroke, where he served as Master from 1985 to 1993.

Dame Lynne commented:

His rich legacy lives on in College and the Bannister award for outstanding performance in academic and sporting achievement is made annually.  Additionally, the Bannister medical scholarship is awarded for the most distinguished performance in FHS examinations.  Roger’s athletics trophies remain on display in Pembroke, honouring his memory and inspiring students and visitors alike to achieve great things. 

Guests also heard tributes to Sir Roger from athlete Mr Steve Cram CBE, and Sir Roger’s wife, Lady Moyra Bannister.
