Celebrating Success: Teddy Smith

NEWS |

Congratulations to Teddy Smith (2018, Chemistry) who has recently been awarded the Proxime Accessit Gibbs Prize for achieving second place in his year across the University. We asked Teddy to share his experience studying chemistry at Pembroke and advice for future applicants:

“Studying chemistry at Pembroke has been a fantastic experience. The Chemistry course at Oxford is very tough, but the teaching and support provided at Pembroke helped me through the challenging workload and prepared me well to succeed in my exams. Given the excellent research environment I have experienced during my fourth year Part II project, I have decided to continue at Oxford for my DPhil.

Alongside this, my experience here has been shaped by my involvement with rowing at Pembroke. Competitive sport has always been essential to me as a way to cope with the stress my degree, and I’m convinced that continuing with rowing through my finals helped me helped me get good results. In the last 2 years, I have found it immensely rewarding to serve as president of the boat club, where I have helped to maintain Pembroke’s strong rowing tradition.

I would encourage anyone thinking of applying to Pembroke to not be put off by the high workload at Oxford - it is absolutely possible to commit lots of time to extra-curricular activities and still do well academically.”
