The White House has announced that Pembroke alumnus and former US Senator Richard Lugar is to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is the highest civilian honour in the United States and is awarded to "individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".

The citation for the award notes that "Richard Lugar represented Indiana in the United States Senate for more than 30 years. An internationally respected statesman, he is best known for his bipartisan leadership and decades-long commitment to reducing the threat of nuclear weapons. Prior to serving in Congress, Senator Lugar was a Rhodes Scholar and Mayor of Indianapolis from 1968 to 1975. He currently serves as President of the Lugar Center."

Lugar will be presented with his award by President Obama at a ceremony in the White House later this year, along with fellow recipients who include former President Bill Clinton and Chemistry Nobel Laureate Mario Molina.

Richard Lugar came to Pembroke on his Rhodes Scholarship in 1954 to read PPE and was elected JCR President for one of his years here. It was from his room in College that he started a correspondence with another illustrious former Pembroke student, then-Senator J William Fulbright, the founder of the Fulbright Scholarship Programme and long-time Chairman of the US Senate's Foreign Relations Committee. This relationship was to be long-lasting, and in the years to come Senator Richard Lugar followed as a successive Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for two terms, as well as chairing the Senate Agriculture Committee for six years.

A valued and committed member of the Pembroke community, Lugar is an Honorary Fellow of the College. In the USA he is Chairman of the Pembroke College Foundation Inc as well as acting as Honorary Co-Chair of the College's recent Bridging Centuries fundraising campaign.
