Becky was officially chosen for the award, consisting of a medal, certificate, and prize of £1000, in recognition of ‘engaging a diverse, global audience with complex astrophysical ideas presented at an accessible level with a large dose of enthusiasm on the YouTube channel ‘Dr Becky’. She began publishing regular astrophysics videos in 2018, and since then has uploaded over 100 videos and gained over 180,000 subscribers. Becky continues to introduce new videos on a weekly basis.

Reflecting on her YouTube journey and continuing passion for bringing accessible content to a wide audience, Becky commented; “I started the channel so I could share my enthusiasm for what I do as an astrophysicist. I want to inspire young people to think about following a career in science and I want to make the science that I study accessible to all. I am incredibly honoured to be awarded the Mary Somerville medal; my YouTube channel is a real labour of love for me and it is fantastic to have it recognised in this way.”
