Poetry at Pembroke: Nicola Harrison and open-mic
PAST EVENT | 26 February 2020 18:00 - 26 February 2020 19:00
Poetry at Pembroke will return for Hilary 2020! Readings will take place at 6pm most Wednesdays. This reading will feature Nicola Harrison, and an open-mic for anybody else who wishes to contribute.
Nicola Harrison is a professional singer, author, and performance poet. For many years she has written for music-related media such as Classical Music and British Music magazine, newspapers, and columns for Radio 4. She is retained lecturer in singing and performance at Pembroke College, and has written three books, two of which look at the interface of poetry and music in song: The Wordsmith’s Guide to English Song. She specialises in interpretation of text and music, writes and directs her own touring shows of poetry, music, and song, was the director of the acclaimed Spanish show Casa Margarita (with Guy Newbury and classical ensemble), and subsequently Winetown and The Becoming, all written for and performed with folk or jazz ensembles.
She has had published two poetry pamphlets, and is finally putting together her first poetry collection between music gigs, touring, and teaching. Her poem “The Becoming” has been commissioned by Three Choirs Festival this year as a full jazz concert piece. She is frequently invited as guest speaker about her work at various venus and festivals. "The Becoming (Folk)" will be touring the West Country from Taunton to Penzance this year.
