Oxford Conference: Science, Imagination and Wonder – Robert Grosseteste and His Legacy

The Ordered Universe Research Project are hosting a conference, which is taking place in association with the International Robert Grosseteste Society, on 3rd-6th April 2018, at Pembroke College, Oxford. 

The conference takes as its title: Science, Imagination and Wonder: Robert Grosseteste and His Legacy. They encourage applications from all scholarly backgrounds and disciplines, sciences and humanities, for oral or poster presentations. The conference will celebrate the works of Grosseteste, especially in their response to natural phenomena, and the extended legacy of this thought in the Middle Ages and beyond.

The keynote speakers are:

Professor Simon Oliver, Van Mildert Professor of Divinity, Durham University and Residentiary Canon of Durham Cathedral;

Professor Suzanne Conklin Akbari, Professor of English and Medieval Studies and Director of the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto;

Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE, Professor of Physics and Professor of Public Engagement in Science, University of Surrey

Speakers will talk on various aspects of Grosseteste’s interests and legacy, in the Middle Ages and for the modern period, and from the perspectives of Theology, Literary Studies and Medieval Science, and Modern Physics.

In addition to the typical conference activities, Alex Carr, an artist and sculptor who has been part of the Ordered Universe team for several years will be at Pembroke College throughout the conference creating a spontaneous installation in the college chapel based on the themes of Grosseteste’s scientific writing.
