Come along to the Pembroke JCR Art Gallery for a Musical Response delivered by guitarist Jake Smales (Modern Languages, 2014) , inspired by the works in  'Mary Fedden: a voice of her own' at 1pm on Wednesday 28 February.

‘Mary Fedden: a voice of her own’ will run from 17 January - 9 March 2018 at the Pembroke JCR Art Gallery, Oxford. The exhibition is open to the public every Wednesday and Friday between 12pm and 2pm. The Gallery entrance is located on 5 Brewer Street, Oxford, OX1 1QN.

This exhibition brings together works from across college art collections to present a picture of the much-loved British artist, Mary Fedden (1915-2012).

Fedden was best known for her bold, vivid paintings and still life compositions.

Her work is marked by a deep appreciation for individual objects and her compositions occupy an imaginative space; she often painted from life, but transformed her observations through an imaginative inner eye. This exhibition showcases the range of media she worked across, including oil paintings, watercolours, drawings and lithograph prints.​

Fedden considered her husband, the artist Julian Trevelyan, to be her best critic. After his death she remarked, ‘I miss his bright discerning eye everyday’. Throughout her career she often spoke about artists whose work shaped her practice and this display concludes with a selection of works by her contemporaries from Pembroke’s collection, including John Piper, Mary Newcomb and John Minton.

Set alongside artists of influence and inspiration, Fedden’s voice emerges as one distinctly her own.

Highlighting the shared narratives and commonalities between college art collections, this exhibition brings together works by Fedden and Trevelyan from the Pembroke College JCR Art Fund Collection with loans from New College and Nuffield College, Oxford and the New Hall Art Collection in Murray Edwards College, Cambridge.​
