Dr Hiroko Miyokawa 'The Coptic Church and the revival of veneration of St Menas in Egypt'

While small in numbers relative to global Christianity, multi-ethnic Eastern Christian communities are amongst the most ancient natives in the Middle East and the wider West Asia region. Four of the five most important hierarchical centres in Christianity are in this region, whose roots go back to two millennia. These lecture seminars are part of the series on Eastern Christianity held in the last four years, which highlight the rich historical, theological, literary and cultural heritage of Eastern family of churches.

This event is part of the Eastern Christianity Historical, Theological and Cultural Heritage Series.

This event will take place on 20th February at 5pm in the Allen and Overy Room, Pembroke College. It is free and open to the public. 


Hiroko Miyokawa is an Academic Visitor in Middle East Studies at School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, and a Senior Common Room Member at St. Antony's College. She completed her PhD in 2016 at the Graduate School of Global Studies, Tokyo’s Sophia University. Her dissertation focused on religious identity and the construction of Egyptian national consciousness among the Coptic Christians in modern Egypt. During her doctoral studies, she lived in Egypt from 2007 to 2011. Currently she is editing a volume (in Japanese) entitled Churches of Eastern Christianity focusing on the Oriental Orthodox Churches in the Middle East and the surrounding areas.
