2pm – Lecture - What the history of money tells us about its present and future. Is Bitcoin the end of history for money? - James Dewar (1987)
We all know what money is, right? As CJ from 'The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin' might have said "I didn't get where I am today without knowing what money was". If your presenter were an accountant who spent 20 years working in Financial Services had realised at the age of 51 that he didn't know what money was, then it might be interesting to come and listen to what he discovered. This talk will cover the emergence of money and two theories of how and why this happened, the properties and uses of money that we can deduce from its history, the arc of its evolution into what we call money today and why a few people made it their life's work from the 1970s onwards to develop the maths and computer science which eventually culminated in the birth of Bitcoin on 3 January 2009. The talk ends by considering whether Bitcoin might be the end of history for money, noting that the framing of the question is somewhat inspired by Francis Fukuyama. This event is also live-streamed, free
Bio: James Dewar (1987, Maths) worked in Financial Services for over 20 years before taking early 'retirement' in 2020. The first thing he did after this was a Research Masters degree in Finance and Accounting in which he researched Bitcoin vs gold, having known nothing about cryptocurrencies except received wisdoms. After completing this degree in late 2020 he embarked on further learning and research through 2021 before deciding that he should seek out other Bitcoiners and see what they were like 'in real life'. As a consequence he is a co-founder of two UK businesses, a local meetup group in Berkshire and a charity, all focused on the Bitcoin industry. He has spoken at events at his accounting institution and both Bitcoin and other non-Bitcoin industry conferences. He has co-written a recently published open source educational curriculum on Bitcoin aimed at organisations. A panel talk at Meeting Minds 2024 with Henry Oliver on Late Bloomers strikes a chord with him.
5.30pm – Alumni Weekend Reunion Dinner
Join us for our annual Alumni Weekend Reunion Dinner. Open to all Pembroke alumni and a guest. There will be a Drinks Reception and Dinner in Hall. £100 per person
Sunday 21st September:
